Black Pride:
Its interesting that I found this piece looking for stuff on Fisk University using my favorite search engine google.com. As a gay grad of Fisk (class of '90) I must say that from your words things haven't changed. When I was there my friends and I used to think that was quite ironic for a place where being gay or lesbian just seemed natural. Keep your head up, though. I am proud to read of your accomplishments-academic, politically, and creatively. Ultimately those are the things that true "Fiskites" are made of. Most of our HBCUs are less than progressively minded when its comes to gay/lesbian issues. One of my friends has many "hell stories" about being a part of the openly gay group at Morehouse (isn't that funny); and I know people who have problems with the lesbian/bisexual group at Spelman. I think it's just a microcosm of the larger African-American community's problem. I'll tell you what though, if someone could ever link up the GLB grads, former students, and faculty it would surely shock our conservative fellow fiskites (ha, ha, ha)!
